Is your washer making loud noise? Here is how to fix it.

Washers are used almost every day and when problems spring up, it can be worrisome. Making loud noise is one of the most common problems with washers. There is nothing more disconcerting when doing your laundry than hearing a strange knocking, bumping or scratching sound. Even though this problem does not stop the washer from doing its job, it can make you nervous. Therefore, you should try some simple fixes when the washer problems like this occur.

Follow these simple tips to get rid of loud noise when your washer is operating:

  • Turn off your washing machine

Turn your washer off at the first sign of a problem. It may help you to prevent damage and expensive repair. Unplug the washer before conducting any sort of maintenance. If your washing machine started making noise mid-cycle, consult the instruction manual for advice to stop it or drain the drum.

  • Check the drum for loose items

Inspect your washer’s drum for loose items like coins, keys, bra wire, etc. They can become lodged and cause loud knocking sound. Most of them stay in the drum or catch in the door seal. If they fall below the seal, between the drum and the outer plastic tub, they can damage your washing machine. If you suspect that, stop your washing machine and call an appliance repair technician. According to the Whirlpool Institute of Home Science, both top-loading and front-loading washers are capable of allowing a sock to exit the drum and get trapped in areas not normally visible or accessible to the user.

  • Clean the lint filter

Some items loose in the washing machine can work their way down to the lint filter. If you suspect that, you need to check it. Firstly, remove the plastic cover. If your machine has a drain hose, pull it out from its housing, and remove the cap. Once this is drained, there should not be much water left in the lint filter. If your machine does not have a drain hose, lay a towel out and slowly undo the lint filter. Once you have removed the filter, remove any item from within it. Then, remove any items that have been caught in the housing. If you notice your filter is a bit moldy and grimy, give it a quick wash. As soon as the filter and its housing has been cleared of debris, screw the filter back in. If your washing machine is making any strange noises, turn it off by stopping the washing program.

  • Check the level of your washer

Off-balance washers can result in loud thumping or knocking sounds. Check the adjustable legs to make sure it is balanced. If not, adjust them with a screwdriver. Use a level to align height. Turn your machine on again to see if this has resolved the problem.

Things that might be causing the issue:

  • Worn drive belt

If the noise is a high-pitched squeal, your drive belt is the most likely cause and need replacing.

  • Worn tub bearing

The tub bearing keeps the inner tub spinning smoothly. If the bearing wears out, the washer can become very noisy. For some models replacing the tub bearing itself can be difficult. As an alternative, you can consider installing a new outer tub assembly already fit with the new bearing.

  • Malfunctioning drive motor

While washer motors are normally very quiet during operation, a malfunctioning motor can run loudly. Try running the motor without the belt attached to determine if the motor is the source of the noise.

  • Defective drain pump

If the washer is making a loud squeaking sound during the drain cycle, the drain pump might be defective or clogged with debris. If the pump is free of obstructions but continues to make noise, it should be replaced it with the new one.

  • Faulty inlet value

If the washer makes a shuddering or knocking sound during the fill cycle, then the water inlet valve may be at fault. Mineral deposits can build up in the valve creating a restriction that causes the noise. A restricted valve should be replaced. Trying to clean out an old valve is not recommended due to the risk of part failure after repair.
