Is your dryer making a loud noise? Here’s how to fix it.

The dryer is one of the most beloved home appliances as it simplifies and shortens the laundry process. When it makes a lot of noise during operation, it can be irritating and usually means the parts begin to wear out.

Follow these simple tips to get your dryer working properly:

  • Check the drum for hard object

Stop the drying cycle and check inside the drum. Make sure there is no metal or hard plastic objects such as coins, keys or zippers among the clothes you are drying. If you found some hard objects, just pull them out.

  • Check if your dryer is level

Make sure dryer is level and placed on a solid surface. Adjust the leveling legs, which are located on the bottom of the dryer, to level it.

  • Check around the dryer

Make sure nothing is leaning against the dryer. You should leave some space between the washer and dryer so that they do not bang against each other during operation.

  • Check underneath the lint filter

When you pulled out the lint filter, shine a flashlight into the opening. Make sure there is no objects below the filter, which may cause the noise. In case you found some objects, put on gloves and remove them.

Things that might be causing the issue:

  • Worn drum glide bearing

The drum glide bearing is small plastic bearing located on the front of the dryer drum. When the drum rotates, it slides on this plastic bearing. If the bearing wears out or if it dries out, it can produce squealing noise. In this case, it should be replaced.

  • Damaged blower wheel

The blower wheel is typically located on the end of the motor shaft at the front of the dryer. It draws air through the dryer and pushes the air out the vent. When lint and small pieces of clothing get into the blower wheel, dryer will be making noise. Clean the lint filter and blower wheel. It may help to quite the noise. Furthermore, another reason for the noises could be that the blower wheel sleeves have worn out. If so, replace it.

  • Flattened drum support rollers

Drum rollers are typically located in the rear of the dryer one on each corner. They are used to support the drum. Rollers become flattened in place where the drum and rollers touched. This flat spot makes the thump. If one of the rollers is faulty, replace the whole unit.

  • Damaged idler pulley

The idler pulley is located next to the drive motor at the bottom of the dryer. It provides tension on the drum belt. When the idler pulley is worn, dryer makes squeal noise. If the idler pulley squeaks or is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

  • Frayed drive belt

The drive belt is a very long belt which wraps the dryer drum, around a tension pulley, and then around the drive motor. Over time, it becomes frayed or damaged making the dryer works noisy. If the drive belt is worn out, it should be replaced.
